So, should you buy it?ĭevil May Cry is one of those franchises that will just never die, and for good reason. Dante’s still the suave demon-killing badass that you remember him as, and if you’re new to the series, this is an easy opportunity to see just what the controversy over DmC Devil May Cry’s Dante design was all about. In fact, the only game I can think of that surpasses Devil May Cry 3 even to this day is Bayonetta 2. It has some of the best writing, the best cutscenes, and most importantly, the best gameplay of not only just the Devil May Cry franchise, but of its genre as a whole as well. Honestly, the Devil May Cry HD Collection is easily worth the price of admission for DMC 3 alone.

Devil May Cry 2 ultimately is the weakest game in the trilogy, not only for being the easiest in the bunch, but also because of the most underwhelming boss fights in a series known for its epic boss fights. As for whether you’ll have fun playing them, 1 and 3 definitely still hold up, despite the former’s clunkier controls. The tightness of the controls and fluidity of animations are at their worst in the first game, but get progressively better in later games, ultimately culminating in the sheer gaming bliss that is Devil May Cry 3. The original Devil May Cry is the (understandably) clunkiest of the three, betraying its roots as a horror game. This isn’t to say all of them hold up particularly well, however. In fact, the only game to have ever surpassed Devil May Cry 3’s gameplay has been the Bayonetta series, which was essentially made by the a lot of the same people who worked on DMC. In fact, just playing the first couple of levels in Devil May Cry 3 might be enough to remind you why the DMC series is essentially genre-defining. After spending a fair amount of time on all three of these games (sigh, even Devil May Cry 2), the tight action gameplay still holds tight.
It’s easy to think that, considering the latest game in the HD Collection came out in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, the three games wouldn’t have aged well. Well, four games and one unfortunate reboot later, the original trilogy is back in the highest of definitions, and I’m here to answer one simple question: is it worth your money? Much of its infamy and cult fan base was because of one fundamental thing: it was crazy balls-to-the-wall difficult, and we loved it for that very reason. Despite this weird direction, however, it ultimately gave birth to one of the most demanding genres in single player gaming out there - what we like to call the Character Action Game. It’s strange to think of the original Devil May Cry as a Resident Evil game gone horribly wrong, but that’s exactly what it was.
